Vol. 555 No. 2

Adjournment Debate. - State Examinations.

Paul Nicholas Gogarty

Question:

226 Mr. Gogarty asked the Minister for Education and Science if an investigation will be carried out into the alleged major injustice that occurred in the results of the 2002 leaving certificate classical studies at Hewitt College; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18213/02]

In the processing of the appeals, the work of each candidate is fully remarked question by question. A fundamental feature of the appeal process is that a different examiner to the one who originally marked the work performs the re-marking. As is the norm, the appeals process was used again this year as a further quality assurance check on the original marking.

The appeals requested by the students in Hewitt College who sat leaving certificate classical studies, higher level, in June 2002, have been remarked in full accordance with the process in place for dealing with appeals. The chief examiner concerned, having overseen, monitored and reviewed the outcome of the appeal process advised that no further intervention was called for in the case of the remainder of the scripts.

Candidates may request a second viewing of their re-marked scripts if they so wish and they may also make application to independent examination commissioners for confirmation that the appeal processes were carried out properly by my Department. My Department has issued a reply on those lines to Hewitt College in response to their correspondence in the matter.
