Vol. 555 No. 2

Adjournment Debate. - Departmental Expenditure.

Richard Bruton

Question:

377 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the amount of money that remains available to his Department from the voted spending allocation agreed in the Revised Estimates, 2002, to spend in the last quarter of 2002 for capital spending and for current spending; and the way in which this compares with the amount spent for current and for capital purposes in the last quarter of 2001. [18413/02]

The amount of money that remains available to my Department from the voted spending allocation agreed in the Revised Estimates for the last quarter of 2002, in respect of capital and current spending, is as follows: current spending €368,879,000; capital spending €54,289,000. The actual expenditure for the same period in 2001 was as follows: current spending €385,802,000; capital spending €46,255,000.

Question:

378 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the adjustments which he plans to introduce in the last quarter of 2002 in order to bring the overall spending for the year in line with the moneys provided in the Estimates. [18420/02]

The Government has agreed that a projected overrun on the prisons Vote amounting to €20 million can be provided out of savings in other areas of the public service. Subject to this additional expenditure the overall spending, in 2002, on the Justice, Equality and Law Reform group of Votes will be within the allocations provided in the Estimates. It is planned to use savings of €10 million, which will arise over a range of areas on the Justice, Equality and Law Reform Vote, to offset higher than anticipated demand-led expenditure, primarily superannuation costs, which have arisen on the Garda Vote.

Question:

379 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his estimate of the average index of inflation between the last quarter of 2001 and the last quarter of 2002 in the cost of employment goods and services which make up his Department's expenditure. [18427/02]

There is no single index or inflator which is applicable to my Department's spending. However, the percentage change in the expenditure for which my Department is responsible, for the last quarter of 2002, projected, compared with the same period in 2001, actual, is as follows:

Employment (Pay Costs)

5.87%

Goods and Services (Non-Pay Costs)

+5.09%

Total

+2.06%

Unfortunately, due to the manner in which these statistics are maintained, I am unable to give separate figures for goods and services.
