Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Closures.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

233 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will re-examine the provision of second level education in Longford and Newtownforbes in view of the significant population growth in the Longford rural DED. [19235/02]

I am actively examining the matter raised by the Deputy. Last week, I met representatives of the local school retention committee and gave an undertaking to have the case for retention of a second level school in Newtownforbes re-examined by my Department in the light of the most recent demographic data available from census 2002, housing construction and planning application details, and pupil movement into and out of the catchment area. The relevant parties will be notified of the outcome of this review at the earliest opportunity.
