Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - Local Sports Facilities.

Paul Nicholas Gogarty

Question:

263 Mr. Gogarty asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism his plans to carry out a nationwide audit of sports facilities, including State and local authority facilities, clubs and sports facilities owned by educational establishments. [19346/02]

An Agreed Programme for Government includes a commitment to complete a national audit of local sports facilities and put in place a long-term strategic plan to ensure the development of such necessary facilities throughout the State. My Department has commenced preliminary work on drawing up a new long-term strategic plan for the provision of sports facilities throughout the State. As part of the process, a national audit of local sports facilities will also be carried out.

This audit will be key contributor to the development of the strategic plan, which, inter alia, will help target expenditure more effectively. A steering group will be established shortly to oversee this work, which will be carried out under the direction of my Department.
