Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

330 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Transport the extent and nature of the works carried out on the Tralee-Mallow railway line since June 1997; the cost of these works; if further works are to be carried out to upgrade this railway line; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18994/02]

I am informed by Iarnród Éireann that between 1997 and 2001 a total of 45 miles of track was relaid between Mallow and Tralee and a further eight miles are programmed for 2002. The final two miles will be relaid in 2003. In addition to track renewal, other work has been undertaken on bridge renewal, level crossing upgrading and fencing. When completed next year, approximately €50 million will have been spent upgrading the entire infrastructure on the line. It is planned to re-signal the line as part of the mini-CTC project. This is expected to be completed in 2005 at an estimated cost of a further €10 million.
