I propose to answer Questions Nos. 334 and 335 together.
As part of a process aimed at finding an agreed way forward regarding the preservation of extensive areas of the archaeological site at Carrickmines, while allowing the south-eastern motorway to proceed, I met a senior archaeologist from the Dúchas national monuments and architectural protection division together with representatives from An Taisce, on 29 July 2002. As I indicated in my reply to Question No. 1308 of 9 October 2002, I have approved a set of measures to preserve important core features of the site, at an estimated cost of €500,000. The measures are set out in a letter dated 16 September 2002 from my Department to the National Roads Authority, a copy of which is being placed in the Oireachtas Library.
