Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - Street Prostitution.

Tony Gregory

Question:

342 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will request a report from the Garda Síochána regarding the action it is taking to deal with the widespread street prostitution in the Montpelier Hill area of Dublin 7; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18825/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Montpelier Hill area receives ongoing daily attention from both mobile and foot patrols. Community gardaí also provide a uniform presence. I am further informed that Operation Encounter and the Garda beat that covers Benburb Street have been extended to cover the Montpelier Hill area. The Garda adopts a proactive approach in dealing with both clients and prostitutes and the situation is monitored on an ongoing basis. I am assured by the Garda authorities that additional resources will be assigned to the area if necessary.
