Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - Censorship Laws.

John McGuinness

Question:

355 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his views on the matter of concern raised in Parliamentary Question No. 1367 of 9 October 2002 that under the Censorship of Publications Act, 1967, galleries, museums and schools will need the approval of the censor, which will result in delays and costs and which will, in turn, restrict the use of film and video as a medium in these places; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19023/02]

I can inform the Deputy that the relevant legislation is the Censorship of Films Act, 1923, and the Video Recordings Act, 1989. The Video Recordings Act, 1989, provides for exemptions for certain works of an educational nature from the need to be submitted for classification and certification by the Film Censor.
