Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

Finian McGrath

Question:

99 Mr. F. McGrath asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism if he will assist and facilitate Drumcondra Schoolboys Football Club in accessing the maximum funds to develop club services for the young people of Drumcondra. [15491/02]

Under the national lottery-funded sports capital programme, which is administered by my Department, funding is allocated to sporting and community organisations at local, regional and national levels throughout the country towards the provision of sport and recreational facilities.

The club in question was provisionally allocated a grant of €76,186 under the 2001 sports capital programme towards a dressing room-clubhouse development and flood lighting. A letter issued to the club on 29 June 2001, detailing the requirements to enable the funds to be drawn down and pointing out that the relevant docu mentation should be received and approved by the Department and a substantial amount of the work be completed by 27 September 2002, after which date the Department retained the right to withdraw the grant offer. My Department received no response to this letter by the due date. Officials in my Department recently contacted the club again to request that the relevant documentation be submitted immediately and the club gave a verbal undertaking to do so.
Unless the relevant documentation is submitted promptly the Department will have no option but to withdraw the grant offer. All allocations under the 2002 sports capital programme have been made and the club in question did not apply. Should the club have a further project, which is eligible under the programme's criteria, it will be open to it to apply for funding under the 2003 programme, when the details relating to that programme are announced.
