Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - Arts Funding.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

111 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the meetings he has had to date with his counterpart in the Northern Ireland Executive; his plans to explore issues of cross-Border co-operation in relation to the development of young musical talent in view of the advanced level of music participation at a practical level throughout primary and second level schools in the region under the remit of the Executive; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18841/02]

I did not have an opportunity to meet my counterpart in the Northern Ireland Executive prior to the suspension of the Assembly but would hope to do so at a mutually convenient time after its restoration.

Funding for the arts is channelled through the Arts Council, which is responsible for the development of the arts, and is independent with regard to its funding decisions. The matters referred to by the Deputy fall within the council's remit. I am aware, however, that there are regular contacts between the Arts Council and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland on many arts initiatives of common interest.
