Vol. 555 No. 5

Written Answers. - Plant Closures.

Billy Timmins

Question:

133 Mr. Timmins asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if consideration was given to keeping the Arklow section of IFI operational; the instructions which have been given to the liquidator; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19151/02]

I understand that when the extent of the difficulties facing the company began to emerge, the board and management of IFI considered a very wide range of options for the company which might provide a basis for establishing a viable business, including options that would have entailed the Arklow plant remaining operational. Unfortunately, as the Deputy is aware, despite the identification of a number of significant cost savings as part of recent efforts to save the company, it was not possible to establish a basis for a viable future and the board decided that it had no option but to cease trading.

I also understand that it will be a matter for the creditors meeting, which the board of IFI will convene shortly, to appoint a liquidator. The role and responsibilities of the liquidator are established under company law and I have no role in giving any instructions to him. I hope all concerned will co-operate fully with the liquidator and help ensure that an orderly wind-down and liquidation takes place. I believe that this is in everybody's interest.
