Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 22 Oct 2002

Vol. 555 No. 5

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

I request that Dáil Éireann be adjourned under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely, the decision by Irish Rail to close its freight division from the end of next month. In the light of the fact that four serious and fatal accidents involving heavy goods vehicles have taken place in the last 48 hours, there is now an urgent need for the Minister for Transport to intervene and rescind the decision which directly contravenes stated Government policy.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be one contemplated by Standing Order 31.

Surely that matter is urgent as people are dying every day.

I seek the adjournment of the House under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely the decision by Irish Rail to withdraw its rail freight services from the south east. The death knell of service to Rosslare Europort directly impacts on the level of road deaths and carnage in the region. It is therefore vitally important to the economic viability of the region that the Minister for Transport provides the additional funding to the company to ensure the retention of the service.

Having fully considered the matter, I do not consider it to be in order in accordance with Standing Order 31.

I seek the adjournment of the House under Standing Order 31 to discuss a matter of urgent national importance, namely for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to address what measures he intends to take in the light of revelations about the Catholic Church's handling of sexual abuses committed by its priests as aired on the RTE "Prime Time" programme last Thursday evening and whether he will consider initiating a sworn State inquiry on the issue.

Having fully considered the matter, I do not consider it to be in order in accordance with Standing Order 31.
