Vol. 556 No. 2

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Denis Naughten

Question:

148 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the current status of the MapInfo GIS system for plotting of accident locations on non-national roads; when the current results will be published; the funding provided in each of the past five years, 2002 inclusive, to each local authority to implement low cost accident counter measures based on these results; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19648/02]

The MapInfo GIS system has been developed by the local government computer services board to assist the management of the public road network by local authorities, including the management of road accident data.

MapInfo is now fully operational in thirty one of the thirty four county and city councils. The remaining three local authorities have computer-based data systems in place which perform similar functions.

The 2000 non-national road grant allocations included provision for the first time of funding to enable low cost safety improvement works on non-national roads to be carried out by local authorities.

In 2000 and 2001 expenditure of €2,637,864 enabled low cost safety improvement works to be carried out at more than 200 locations on non-national roads. A sum of €2,541,973 was allocated under this grant category in 2002 and it is expected that by the end of this year improvements will be carried out at a further 152 locations.

Details of payments-allocations to local authorities under the low cost safety improvement grant scheme are set out on the following table:
