Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Laboratory Testing Facilities.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

260 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food his proposals to establish a testing laboratory here to test food for potentially lethal dioxins; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20421/02]

Based on testing and analysis carried out in this country on background levels of dioxins, there is no reason to believe that the presence of dioxins is a problem for Ireland. My Department, nevertheless, continues to operate a testing programme using laboratory facilities based abroad.

In view of developments in other countries related to dioxins, it is my view that the testing programme should be further enhanced and domestic testing facilities developed. My Department is currently working with the State Laboratory to develop testing facilities in the new laboratory complex in Backweston. In the meantime, my Department is in discussions with a university department about an interim testing facility which can meet the needs in this regard pending the establishment of the Backweston facility.
