Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Afforestation Programme.

Eoin Ryan

Question:

439 Mr. Eoin Ryan asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources his plans to encourage the planting of broadleaf trees. [19804/02]

Up to the early 1990s the planting of broadleaf species was very low averaging about 3% of total planting per annum. Using the incentives available under the CAP afforestation programme 1993-99, broadleaf planting increased to 20% of total planting by the end of that programme. My Department is now committed to achieving a broadleaf planting target of 3% of total planting by the end of 2006 as outlined in the CAP rural development plan 2000-2006.
