Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Paul Kehoe

Question:

577 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Transport if there has been changes to the regulations in respect of the testing of tyres on the NCT; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19721/02]

The reasons for refusal of a test certificate as they relate to tyres were amended with effect from 1 January 2002 to include the tyre specification. The change was provided for in the Road Traffic (National Car Test) No. 3 Regulations, 2001.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

578 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Transport his proposals to amend the NCT scheme so that the 28 day period for retesting is extended; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19739/02]

Provided an NCT retest is carried out not more than 28 days after the initial test, only those items in respect of which a test certificate was refused are inspected during the retest. Outside the 28 day period a full inspection is carried out because of the level of risk of additional reasons for refusal of a test certificate being present in the vehicle due either to wear and tear or accidental damage since the vehicle underwent the initial inspection. I am satisfied this is a reasonable arrangement and have no proposals to amend it.
