Vol. 556 No. 3

Written Answers. - Price Inflation.

Mary Upton

Question:

115 Dr. Upton asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if, in view of public concerns regarding increased prices in the retail trade, she will consider introducing regulations which would require labels to show the most recent occasion on which the price for a particular product had been increased, and the amount in each case; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [20377/02]

Retailers are required to display the selling price and, in cer tain circumstances, the unit price in a legible manner on or near all items offered for sale to consumers. New regulations are also being drafted that will clarify the obligations of retailers and other traders in this area. I do not believe that it would facilitate consumers in comparing prices between different retail outlets and different product brands and sizes to require that excessive amounts of information be included on a label on each product.
