Vol. 556 No. 4

Written Answers. - Accident and Emergency Services.

Joe Higgins

Question:

190 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Health and Children the measures he intends to introduce in the short-term to reduce waiting times for patients attending the casualty department in the Mater Hospital. [20774/02]

I have approved a capital grant of €1.355 million for the extension and refurbishment of the accident and emergency facilities in the Mater hospital. The work, which includes the provision of additional resuscitation cubicles, the development of a chest pain assessment unit and the establishment of a minor injury unit, will significantly improve facilities in the emergency department and will also have knock-on benefits in relieving bed capacity pressure. It is estimated that the improvements will be completed within six to nine months. The extension and refurbishment of the Mater hospital accident and emergency department will be an interim measure pending the completion of the major redevelopment project, incorporating the transfer of services from the Children's Hospital, Temple Street, which is currently in progress on the Mater campus.
