Question:

192 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Transport the number of people who were killed in 30 mph speed limit zones and in 40 mph speed limit zones, and the number who were killed on open roads or on motorways in each of the past five years. [20711/02]

Statistics relating to road accidents, based on information provided by the Garda Síochána, are published by the National Roads Authority in their annual Road Accident Facts reports. The most recent report is in respect of 2000 and that report, along with reports relating to previous years, are available in the Oireachtas Library. The number of people killed in 2001 was 411, but a breakdown along the lines requested by the Deputy is not yet available for that year. The numbers of people killed arising from road accidents in the various speed limit zones – where that information was available – from 1997 to 2000 are as follows:
