Vol. 556 No. 4

Written Answers. - Road Signage.

Jack Wall

Question:

199 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Transport the plans his Department has to provide proper speed limit signage on the national roads; the grants available from his Department to local authorities to ensure the upgrading or provision of such signage; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20736/02]

The provisions relating to the application of speed limits are established through the Road Traffic Act, 1994. The Act provided in particular that the power to determine what speed limits are to be applied at particular locations on roads is vested in local authorities. This power is exercised through by-laws made by local authorities following consultation with the Garda Síochána, and with the consent of the National Roads Authority in respect of national roads. In exercising this function, local authorities may only apply speed limits that are established either directly in the Road Traffic Act, 1994, or in regulations made by me under that Act. Responsibility for the provision and maintenance of traffic signs, including speed limit signage, on the national road network and the funding of these works is a matter for the National Roads Authority.
