Question:

201 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the amount of money which was collected from on-the-spot fines in 2000 and 2001; the number of people who were fined within 30 mph speed limit areas; the number of people who were fined within 40 mph speed limit areas; the number of people who were fined for driving faster than 60 mph in national blanket limit areas or faster than 70 mph on motorways; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20709/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 200 and 201 together.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the information sought by the Deputy in relation to speeding fines in respect of the year 2000 and 2001 is as set out in the tabular statement hereunder:

Year

Number of on-the-spot speeding Fines

Amount collected in respect of Garda imposed fines on the spot for traffic offences

2000

224,264

£13.84 million

2001

345,652*

£17.30 million

* This figure is provisional.
A breakdown of these figures is not readily available as statistics are not compiled in such a way as to distinguish between detections made in the various speed zones and money collected for fines-on-the-spot for speeding and other traffic offences. The Deputy may wish to know that additional money is collected through the courts in respect of on-the-spot fines which become the subject of court proceedings.
