Written Answers. - Shannon Airport.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

113 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Defence the level of involvement which has been requested of the Defence Forces in providing security or any other assistance for the US military at Shannon Airport or elsewhere; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20660/02]

An Garda Síochána has primary responsibility for law and order, including the protection of the internal security of the State. One of the roles of the Defence Forces, as assigned by Government, is to aid the civil power which means in practice to assist, when requested, An Garda Síochána. There is ongoing and close liaison between the Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces regarding security matters. In relation to security at Shannon Airport, no requests to assist the Garda Siochána have been made to the Defence Forces to date.
