Vol. 556 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Security Procedures.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

123 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Defence if it is proposed to, advance, augment or improve national security and defence procedures, in view of ongoing international acts of terrorism; his proposals to deal with such eventualities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20853/02]

The Garda Síochána has primary responsibility for law and order, including the protection of the internal security in the State. There is ongoing and close liaison between the Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces in relation to security matters. The Garda Síochána keeps security matters under intensive and continuous review and takes all appropriate operational measures available to deal with threats emanating from international terrorism. Disclosure of particular measures taken would, of course be counterproductive. I also understand that the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform will be bringing forward legislative proposals as soon as possible aimed at countering international terrorism.

Question No. 124 answered with Question No. 122.
