Vol. 556 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Jack Wall

Question:

144 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Education and Science his plans to address the problems in relation to seat belts on school buses; the number of accidents on school buses reported to his Department in each of the past five years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20737/02]

Safety on school transport is of paramount importance to my Department and Bus Éireann, who operate the scheme on behalf of my Department.

Matters relating to safety, including the provision of seat belts, are being examined by the school transport section of my Department together with Bus Éireann and the Department of the Environment and Local Government. A report was completed and submissions invited from all interested parties. Further consideration will be given to the question of safety in the light of the report and submissions received.

The number of accidents on school bus services is not readily available. An up to date report on the matter has been requested from Bus Éireann and the details will be forwarded to the Deputy as soon as possible.

John Perry

Question:

145 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will allow an extension of the school transport for persons (details supplied) in County Sligo up to a location (details supplied), as the present pick up point is on a very busy road, with no footpath; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20658/02]

My Department has requested a report from the transport liaison officer, County Sligo Vocational Education Committee regarding the school bus route in question.

The Deputy will be advised of the position as soon as the report is received and assessed.
