Vol. 556 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

John Bruton

Question:

153 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason his Department has not responded to ongoing representations made on behalf of a person regarding the provision of remedial teachers in mathematics for children with special needs; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20753/02]

I regret the delay in responding to the Deputy's representations. This arose because of the sheer volume of demand which has been falling on the special education section of my Department in recent times. Measures have recently been introduced to address these difficulties and I am confident such delays will not arise in the future.

With regard to the child in question, I am somewhat concerned that the needs of this child do not appear to be adequately addressed notwithstanding my Department's allocation of resource teacher support to meet the child's needs. I am therefore arranging for a member of my Department's inspectorate to call to the school to investigate whether additional special support is required in this case and the form such support might take.
