Vol. 556 No. 5

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

193 Ms Lynch asked the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs the reason for the delay in the allocation of grants under the White Paper, Supporting Voluntary Activity; if he will expedite the allocation of these grants; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20907/02]

The White Paper on Supporting Voluntary Activity introduced a number of measures with the objective of supporting and developing the sector. The funding schemes to support the role of federations and networks in the sector and to provide training and supports for the sector are administered by the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The scheme to support the role of federations and networks attracted 152 applications and required detailed examination and assessment which was carried out with the assistance of the White Paper's implementation and advisory group. The group which consists of both statutory and voluntary representatives is tasked with advising on the implementation of the recommendations contained in the White Paper.

The assessment stage of the process is largely complete. However, a small number of administrative matters remain which must be addressed before my Department can bring the scheme to a conclusion. Every effort is being made to ensure that these matters will be finalised shortly. The scheme of training and supports for the voluntary and community sector attracted 540 applications and a detailed assessment of these applications is currently taking place in the Department. All applicants will be advised of the outcome in respect of their application at the earliest possible date.

Michael Ring

Question:

194 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Social and Family Affairs if a disability allowance appeal will be opened for a person (details supplied) in County Mayo; and if an oral hearing or a medical examination will be scheduled for this person. [20890/02]

The person's claim for disability allowance was refused by a deciding officer following an examination by a medical assessor of the Department who expressed the view that he was not medically qualified for this payment. The person has appealed this decision to the social welfare appeals office and in the context of his appeal he will be examined by another medical assessor. The person will be notified of the date and venue for this examination when the arrangements have been made. Under social welfare legislation decisions in relation to claims must be made by deciding officers and appeals officers. These officers are statutorily appointed and I have no role in regard to making such decisions.
