Vol. 556 No. 5

Written Answers. - Food Labelling.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

78 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will provide a progress report on the work of the committee set up by him to examine food labelling issues; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20841/02]

I established the food labelling group in July this year to examine issues surrounding food labelling in the context of consumer expectations about the food they buy and to come forward with recommendations by the end of the year.

The group which is widely representative of the major stakeholders in the food chain – consumer interests, industry, Departments and agencies – held its first meeting on 29 August. Since then the group has met on four occasions at plenary level and three times at sub group level.

All issues relating to labelling continue to be examined in detail. The group is on course to complete its report later this month.
