Vol. 557 No. 2

Written Answers. - Traffic Control Measures.

Paudge Connolly

Question:

249 Mr. Connolly asked the Minister for Transport if progress has been made on a Monaghan town car parking study. [21834/02]

The imposition of prohibitions or restrictions on parking on public roads is a matter in the first instance for individual road authorities through the provision of appropriate traffic signs or roadway markings. The legislative framework through which restrictions and prohibitions may be applied to the parking of vehicles on public roads is contained in sections 35 and 36 of the Road Traffic Act, 1994. Regulations made under section 35, entitled the Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) Regulations, 1997 and 1998, set out the specific range of controls that apply to parking of vehicles. Section 36 provides for the making of by-laws by road authorities in relation to paid parking. I am not aware of the study referred to in the question, however, it was not intended that the Department should exercise supervision of this process.
