Vol. 557 No. 3

Written Answers. - Institutes of Technology.

Olwyn Enright

Question:

129 Ms Enright asked the Minister for Education and Science his plans to proceed with a sworn inquiry into the breaches of integrity of the examination system at a college (details supplied) in County Limerick; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21947/02]

In accordance with a proposal adopted by the governing body of Limerick Institute of Technology at its meeting held on 20 November 2001, the institute's director wrote to the predecessor to formally request, on behalf of the governing body, that he establish a sworn inquiry into matters concerning breaches of integrity of examinations in the institute.

It was decided to accede to the governing body's request for a sworn inquiry into the matter and the institute was notified accordingly. The present position is that I am appointing Mr. Sean Ryan, senior counsel, to conduct the inquiry. Discussions have taken place between officials of my Department and Mr. Ryan in relation to administrative matters surrounding the conduct of the inquiry. Terms of reference for the inquiry have been prepared by the Attorney General and will be forwarded to Mr. Ryan shortly.
