Vol. 557 No. 3

Written Answers. - General Medical Services Scheme.

Denis Naughten

Question:

213 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will bring the GMS in line with the Department of the Environment and Local Government scheme to allow over 70s a free medical test for the issuing of driving licences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22121/02]

The general medical services scheme is a treatment based scheme which enables medical card holders avail of a range of services from their general practitioner, their community pharmacist, social services in the community and as an in-patient or out-patient in public hospitals, all of these free of charge.

However, the issue of medical certificates to any medical card holder, regardless of age, except in the case of first and last certificates required for employments absences, may incur charges. I do not have any plans to alter the present GMS contract to bring it in line with that of the Department of the Environment.
