Vol. 557 No. 3

Written Answers. - Diabetes Services.

Denis Naughten

Question:

214 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for Health and Children further to Parliamentary Questions Nos. 266 and 301 of 25 June 2002 in relation to diabetes services, the actions he has taken to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22122/02]

As I informed the House in response to the earlier questions referred to by the Deputy, the Diabetes Federation of Ireland has been informed that its report, Diabetes Care: Securing the Future, would be considered in the context of the current health strategy and within the limits of available funding.

The cardiovascular health strategy, Building Healthier Hearts, made recommendations on the prevention of heart disease and many of these are also relevant to the prevention of diabetes.

I recently met the Diabetes Federation of Ireland when I undertook to have a meeting arranged between senior officials of my Department and representatives of the Diabetes Federation of Ireland to discuss the report Diabetes Care: Securing the Future. This meeting will be chaired by myself and will take place in January 2003.
