Vol. 557 No. 3

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Mary Upton

Question:

231 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he proposes additional legislation to tackle so-called joy-riding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22113/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Road Traffic Acts, 1961 to 1993, which they fully enforce are adequate to deal with situations where persons use or take possession of mechanically propelled vehicles without the consent of the owner. Any amendment to road traffic legislation is a matter for the Minister for the Environment and Local Government who is responsible for all road traffic legislation. Within my remit, I have no plans at present to introduce legislation on this topic.
