Written Answers. - Health and Safety in Schools.

Seán Crowe

Question:

248 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Science when the last comprehensive national review of safety and security of schools was carried out. [22381/02]

In accordance with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 1989, it is the responsibility of school management authorities to have a safety statement in place in their workplaces. It is open to school management authorities to apply to the building unit of my Department for capital funding to address any specific safety concerns identified in the course of preparing or updating a safety statement. Applications for capital funding at primary level are considered by my Department if the cost of any such works of an emergency nature exceeds the amount available under the devolved grant scheme for minor works.
