Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

249 Ms Lynch asked the Minister for Education and Science the school projects which were approved in the past five years in both Cork constituencies. [22569/02]

Statistical information regarding school projects which have been approved in the past five years on a county or constituency basis is not available. However, if the Deputy requires information on any specific project I will be pleased to provide it.

Question:

250 Ms Lynch asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the decision of his Department to grant permission for an extension to Scoil Nicolais when he had informed all Deputies that no school project would be approved by his Department until the Book of Estimates was to hand. [22570/02]

I assume the Deputy is referring to the proposed new school at Grange Frankfield, Cork. The project in question has recently proceeded to tender as part of the 2002 programme. The expenditure proposals in respect of the 2003 programme are being formulated now that the Estimates for 2003 have been agreed. However, I will not be in a position to publish details of the 2003 programme until the new year.

Charlie O'Connor

Question:

251 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sell off the second level school site in Castleview, Kingswood Heights, Tallaght, Dublin 24, and use the proceeds of the sale to fund the long promised building programme for St. Killian's national schools in Castleview; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22571/02]

Question:

252 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will take immediate action in respect of the asbestos roof at St. Killian's junior national school, Castleview, Dublin 24; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22572/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 251 and 252 together.

Architectural planning for a building project and refurbishment works at St. Killian's national school is at an advanced stage. The issue of asbestos will be dealt with in the context of the building proposals. Decisions on projects proceeding to tender and construction in 2003 will be taken in the light of the allocations to be made for primary school buildings and when all budget decisions have been taken by the Government. It is not possible at this point to give an indication as to when construction will commence. The question of the future use of the site referred to by the Deputy is a separate issue and will be dealt with as such.
