Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Rural Transport Initiative.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

384 Ms B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Transport the uptake of funding for the various projects under the rural transport initiative; if the scheme is to be extended; the funding provided to date to County Kerry under the scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22317/02]

To date, eight community transport groups have received funding for transport operations under the rural transport initiative while projects from a further 17 groups have recently been approved for operational funding. Kerry Community Transport was one of the eight original groups selected for operational funding and has received funding of €114,276 so far under the initiative. The overall allocation is being paid in instalments and I understand from Area Development Management Ltd., which is managing the RTI on behalf of my Department, that a further allocation would be due to the group in the near future. In all some €3 million will be spent on the RTI this year and a similar amount is earmarked for 2003.

An inter-departmental committee was established in 2001, under the chairmanship of my Department, with the remit of bringing forward options for the development of rural public transport policy. A study commissioned by the committee is now nearing completion and I look for ward to receiving the committee's proposals by the end of this year. This study, together with the experience gained from the RTI, will enable me to formulate appropriate policies for rural transport for the period beyond 2003 when the recent pilot scheme is due to end.
