Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Archaeological Sites.

Sean Fleming

Question:

442 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the works carried out to date at the Rock of Dunamaise, County Laois, by Dúchas; the funds expended to date; and the plans for further conservation works at this site. [22164/02]

The position regarding the Rock of Dunamaise is that the first phase of works, which comprised conservation and partial rebuilding of masonry structures, removal of vegetation from site surfaces and walls and provision of an access route for works, has been completed. These works are being funded under the National Development Plan 2000-2006 and to date, €319,126.46 has been expended on them.

I hope to be in position shortly to arrange that a second phase of works, which will see further conservation and consolidation works and improved visitor access and information, will be advertised for tender.
