Written Answers. - Marine Accidents.

Paul Kehoe

Question:

97 Mr. Kehoe asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the progress made to date in the independent inquiry into the Fethard drowning tragedy during the summer; when a report will be made available; and the reason it has taken so long to compile this report. [22420/02]

Brendan Howlin

Question:

112 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources when he expects to receive the report of the Marine Accident Investigation Board into the loss of four lives off Fethard-on-Sea on 28 July 2002 following the sinking of a sea-angling vessel, the Pisces; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22345/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 97 and 112 together.

The investigation into the tragic accident off Fethard-on-Sea, resulting in the deaths of five people, is being carried out by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board, an independent body established in June this year under the Merchant Shipping (Investigation of Marine Casualties) Act, 2000. Under the Act the board is required to publish a report of any investigation it undertakes into a marine casualty after having received the observations of parties likely to be adversely affected by the publishing of the report. I understand that the draft report is now being forwarded to those parties and in accordance with the Act they have 28 days to respond. When that procedure is complete the final report will be drawn up and published and as provided for under the Act a copy will be transmitted to me as soon as it is published.
