Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

David Stanton

Question:

102 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources the amount needed to address the problem of coastal erosion in Youghal, County Cork, according to the most recent report made available to his Department; the amount which his Department has made available; his further plans in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22440/02]

Responsibility for coast protection rests with the property owner be that a local authority or a private individual. In May 2002 my Department provided funding of €37,500 to Cork County Council towards the preparation of planning and contract documents and foreshore lease-licence application at Youghal, on the basis that they indicated that they would only be in a position to spend that amount in the current year.

My Department also recently requested all coastal local authorities to submit proposals for coast protection works for the period 2003-06. Cork County Council submitted three proposals in relation to coast protection works required at Youghal. It is proposed to carry out the works in three phases. The estimated cost of these works is €5.55 million.

The question of funding works there in 2003 and beyond will be considered in the context of the funding available for coast protection works and overall national priorities.
