Vol. 557 No. 4

Written Answers. - Sheep Population.

Billy Timmins

Question:

133 Mr. Timmins asked the Taoiseach the total number of breeding sheep here; the number of low-land sheep; the number of hill sheep; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22713/02]

The CSO's latest estimates of the number of sheep, in June 2000 to 2002 inclusive, are set out in the following table:

Number of sheep (000)

June 2000

June 2001

June 2002

Total sheep

7,555.0

7,293.8

7,200.9

Breeding sheep

4,216.3

3,978.8

3,880.6

Other sheep

3,338.7

3,315.0

3,320.3

These results take account of the June 2000 census of agriculture results, which will be published in full detail, including county figures, in December. The estimate for June 2002 will be subject to minor revisions when a regional breakdown becomes available, also in December. No breakdown is available between low-land and hill sheep.
