Vol. 557 No. 5

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Michael Ring

Question:

183 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will examine the case of a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [22756/02]

The provision of medical services in the case of a person from County Mayo is the responsibility of the Western Health Board in the first instance. However, I have made inquiries of the Western Health Board and I have been advised that the person in question is on the waiting list for a lung transplant. I have also been advised that the question of when a lung transplant can take place is dependant upon the availability of a suitable matching donor organ. All patients receive appropriate clinical priority while on the waiting list. Pending the establishment of lung transplantation in this country, an agreement is in place with the Freeman Hospital in the United Kingdom for the treatment of Irish patients.
