Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

John Perry

Question:

202 Mr. Perry asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason work has not commenced on Easkey Garda Station in County Sligo; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that points were lost on the tidy town competition due to the condition of the building; if he will instruct an official to meet the residents of the town to discuss the matter; the reason the necessary approval has not been given; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22808/02]

I am aware that certain refurbishment works are required to be undertaken at Easkey Garda Station. While I am not in a position to say when these works might commence, they will be progressed as quickly as possible and without undue delay.

All such works to Garda stations are carried out following an assessment of the situation by the Office of Public Works. Agreement is reached between the Garda authorities and that office on the extent of each project and, having due regard to overall Garda building programme priorities and the availability of financial and other resources, appropriate arrangements are made to have the works completed. In all the circumstances, a meeting as suggested would not serve any useful purpose.
