Vol. 557 No. 5

Written Answers. - Garda Investigations.

Phil Hogan

Question:

204 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself with the performance of the Garda Síochána in respect of allegations of criminal activity at St. Michael's, Cappaquin, County Waterford, from the period of 1978 to 1996 inclusive; if it is his intention to include performance of the police force in any inquiry that may be established by him; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23005/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that all matters of a criminal nature that were brought to the attention of the Garda referring to the institution in question were fully investigated, and that the investigation files were forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions. I am further informed that the Garda authorities are not aware of any suggestion that the Garda investigation was anything less than satisfactory. I do not propose to establish a separate inquiry into this matter.
