Vol. 557 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Spatial Strategy.

Martin Ferris

Question:

216 Mr. Ferris asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the reason Tralee has not been proposed as one of the gateway towns under the national spatial strategy; and if he will consider reviewing this decision to ensure that Tralee is given this status as a necessary part of ensuring the future development of the region. [22854/02]

The national spatial strategy, to be published shortly, will place a strong focus on policies which will help regions grow to their potential and participate, in a more balanced way, in the country's continuing economic and social development.

Tralee's substantial population base, its strategic location on road and rail networks, and its developing tourism base, as well as its extensive employment, retailing and administrative functions represent assets of demonstrated importance in developing the potential of the south-west region.
