Vol. 557 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sports Funding.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

78 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism when the proposed community facilities fund, which would support the development of community sports facilities not covered by existing schemes, will be established; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22495/02]

My Department administers two capital grants schemes towards the provision of community sports facilities. Under the sports capital programme funding is allocated to organisations and clubs to assist them in the provision of sports facilities, while under the local authority swimming pool programme grants are available to local authorities towards the cost of building and refurbishment of swimming pools. The proposed community facilities fund, as set out in the Agreed Programme for Government, will be created under the local government fund to support the development of facilities not covered by existing schemes. In view of the Deputy's interest in the proposed fund, I will bring the matter to the attention of my colleague, the Minister for the Environment and Local Government, whose Department has responsibility for the local government fund.
