Question:

134 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department expressed the view to South Dublin County Council's planning department that there was adequate space in the existing schools for pupils when the plans were being drawn up in the Killnaroan and Killtipper action plan in September 2000; and if his Department has revised their position on this issue. [22774/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 132 to 134, inclusive, together.

Officials of my Department's planning section meet on a regular basis with the planning department of South Dublin County Council with a view to identifying the need for additional educational provision and to reserving sites for schools, where required. My Department is unaware of any shortage of primary school places in the areas referred to by the Deputy, however the areas covered by the Killinarden and Kiltipper action plan are being monitored by my Department. Any need to increase school places in these areas will be addressed by extending existing school capacity or through new school provision as appropriate.
With regard to accommodation needs, my Department is prepared to examine applications for capital funding from individual schools in the areas referred to by the Deputy. However, decisions on projects proceeding to architectural planning will be taken in the light of the allocations to be made for school building purposes and when all budget decisions have been taken by the Government. Schools in these areas should ensure that essential health and safety issues at the school are attended to and should continue to use the devolved grant for minor works. If the cost of any works of an emergency nature exceeds the amount available under the devolved grant, they may apply to my Department's building unit for grant-aid.

Question:

135 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the overcrowded conditions in Scoil Caitlín Maude, Tamhlacht; and if he will make a statement outlining the working conditions in the school for pupils and teachers. [22775/02]

The authorities of three schools located on the same site, including Scoil Chaitlín Maude, have applied to my Department for grant-aid towards the provision of security measures, an extension to the car park and replacement of windows. Tender documentation has been received by my Department to have windows and doors replaced at all three schools and architectural planning is at an early stage for the remaining works. Decisions relating to the rate of progress to construction of individual projects will be taken in the light of the allocation made for school building purposes in the Estimates for 2003. In this context, I will publish details of the expenditure proposals in the new year. It is not possible at this point to say when construction will commence.
