Vol. 557 No. 5

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

Ned O'Keeffe

Question:

159 Mr. N. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources when funding will be made available from his Department to enable works to be carried out to address the problem of erosion at a location (details supplied) in County Cork. [22939/02]

Responsi bility for coastal protection rests with the property owner whether it be a local authority or a private individual. My Department recently requested all coastal local authorities to submit proposals for coastal protection works for the period 2003-06 and Cork County Council submitted a proposal for the location in question at an estimated cost of €70,000. It was number ten in their order of priority. The question of funding works at the location in 2003 and beyond will be considered in the context of the very limited funding available for coastal protection works and overall national priorities.
