Vol. 557 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tourism Industry.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

174 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism his expectations in respect of tourism numbers for 2003; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [22960/02]

Based on soundings from the industry and our tourism agencies, there are some early indications that the tourism season in 2003 may see some further improvement on this year's performance. A positive performance is predicated on a number of assumptions, including a steady recovery in the economies of our main source markets, namely, Great Britain, the US and mainland Europe, a restoration of air access capacity on key routes and no further setbacks in terms of military conflict in the Middle East.

My view is that the medium to long-term outlook for the tourism sector remains bright. As long as we maintain our international competitiveness in terms of pricing, access and the quality of our product, the sector should in time overcome its present difficulties. In this context, the Government will continue to offer appropriate levels of support to the industry, while seeking to ensure that it gets the best return on its substantial investment in the sector.
