My Department recently grant aided a small extension at the school referred to by the Deputy. My Department's primary building unit has no record of any other application for grant aid for building works at this school.

Architectural planning has commenced for major developments at the schools referred to by the Deputy. I will be publishing my expenditure proposals in January. In the meantime, it is not possible to give any indication as to the timetable for the commencement of construction of individual projects.

In August 2000, architectural planning commenced for the provision of improved accommodation at the school referred to by the Deputy. Since then, enrolments at the school have fallen considerably and my Department is currently reviewing the long-term viability of the school.

The extension project at Meán Scoil na Toirbhirte, Miltown, County Kerry, which includes the provision of a PE hall, is currently at stage 5 – bill of quantities – of architectural planning. When this documentation is received from the school authority it will be examined by officials in the building unit of my Department, and if in order, the question of authorising the school authority to proceed to stage 6 – tender action and report – will be considered as in previous years when all budgetary issues for 2003 have been finalised and the precise allocations for 2003 fully determined.

It is proposed to provide an extension and undertake some refurbishment including examining the PE hall at Rathmore community school. The appointment of a full design team and the commencement of architectural planning will be considered, as in previous years, when all budgetary issues for 2003 have been finalised and the precise allocations for 2003 fully determined.

It is proposed to provide an extension including a PE hall at St. Brendan's secondary school. This project is currently at stage one – site survey – of architectural planning. However, my Department has an extensive post-primary schools' building programme under way at present with a substantial financial commitment being carried forward into 2003.

Therefore decisions relating to the progression of individual projects will be taken, as in previous years, when all budgetary issues for 2003 have been finalised and the precise allocations for 2003 fully determined.

It is proposed to provide an extension including a PE hall and undertake some refurbishment at St. Joseph's secondary school, Ballybunion, County Kerry.

The schedules of accommodation have been sent to the school's management authority for acceptance. Once the schedules have been accepted, the question of the appointment of the design team will arise and this will be considered, as in previous years, when all budgetary issues for 2003 have been finalised and the precise allocations for 2003 fully determined

This project is currently at stage 3 – outline sketch scheme – of architectural planning. However my Department has an extensive post-primary school's building programme under way at present with a substantial financial commitment being carried forward into 2003.

My Department is currently in negotiations to purchase the site for the new school at Brandon. It is proposed to provide a PE hall as part of the new school building. This project is currently at the pre-tender stage of architectural planning. However my Department has an extensive post-primary schools' building programme under way at present with a substantial financial commitment being carried forward into 2003.

It is proposed to provide an extension at Christian Brothers school, Tralee, County Kerry. This project is currently at stage 2 – out line sketch scheme – of architectural planning. An application has been made for minor works at St. Brigid's secondary school, County Kerry. This will require the appointment of a design team to determine the extent of the works necessary.

My Department has an extensive post-primary schools building programme under way at present with a substantial financial commitment being carried forward into 2003.

The matter of allowing additional projects into architectural planning will be decided when all budgetary issues for 2003 have been finalised and the precise allocations for 2003 fully determined.

260 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he intends to honour his commitments to schools building projects; and the stage the development is at for Gaelscoil, Dunboyne, County Meath. [23301/02]

My Department has an extensive primary school building programme under way at present, details of which are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. In view of the extensive nature of the programme, my Department has no plans at present to initiate architectural planning for any further major building projects for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime, the board of management should use the devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety works.

261 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Education and Science if a physical education hall will be provided at Firhouse community college, Dublin 24; if his attention has been drawn to the frustration of the community at the continued delay in progressing the project; and if he will make a statement on the matter. It is proposed to provide a PE hall at Firhouse community college. However, my Department has an extensive post-primary schools building programme under way at present with a substantial financial commitment being carried forward into 2003.

Therefore, decisions relating to the progression of individual projects will be taken, as in previous years, in light of the allocations to be made for school building purposes in the Estimates and when all budget decision have been taken by the Government.

262 Mr. O'Connor asked the Minister for Education and Science the contacts he has had with the board of management of Glenasmole national school in Dublin south west regarding the need for works at this school; if his attention has been drawn to the clear need for these works; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department has an extensive primary school building programme under way at present, details of which are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie.

In view of the extensive nature of the programme, my Department has no plans at present to initiate architectural planning for any further major building projects for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime, the board of management should use the devolved grant to deal with any urgent health and safety works.

263 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education and Science when the building programme at St. Nicholas's national school, Galway, will take place; if the building programme for the school has gone to tender; and when work is likely to start. [23316/02]

Architectural planning for a building project at St. Nicholas's national school, Galway, is at an advanced stage. Decisions on projects proceeding to tender and construction in 2003 will be taken in the light of the allocation for primary school buildings in the 2003 Estimates.

I will be announcing my expenditure proposals for school buildings in the new year. It is not possible at this point to say when construction will commence.
