Vol. 558 No. 1

Written Answers. - Third Level Colleges.

Kathleen Lynch

Question:

286 Ms Lynch asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in relation to the third level college for the north side of Cork city. [23689/02]

In October 1999 Cork Institute of Technology and National University of Ireland, Cork made a joint proposal to establish a Cork college of higher education on the north side of Cork.

Mr. Joe McHugh was appointed to develop the proposal for such a facility. This report was presented in January 2001. In February 2001 the Taoiseach announced the establishment of an implementation task force. The task force actively engaged in scoping the detailed arrangements for the establishment including site identification, proposed course mix, management structures, possible procurement options etc., and expects to finish its work shortly.

This project, along with all other capital projects in the third level sector, will be the subject of a review, by my Department with the Higher Education Authority and the institutions, of all potential projects with a view to prioritisation and re-phasing, in light of capital allocations in 2003.
