Vol. 558 No. 1

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

290 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science when he will grant permission to go to tender for the proposed new second level school in Newport, County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23733/02]

As with all proposals involving major capital expenditure, it is essential to confirm that the provision of a new second level school in Newport is necessary, having regard to pupil numbers and existing provision in the general area, before it can be allowed to proceed to the next stage. In this context, a review of second level provision in the Newport area is being undertaken by the planning section of my Department and a decision on the Newport proposal will be taken on foot of this review. Pending the outcome of this review, no further action in relation to the development of the school is proposed.

Question No. 291 answered with Question No. 264.

Question:

292 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science when he expects to sanction funding for a new sports hall for Davitt college, Castlebar, County Mayo; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23735/02]

Architectural planning for the project to which the Deputy refers is proceeding. Officials in the building unit of my Department are currently examining the stage 4/5 submission – detailed design-bill of quantities. When this examination is completed, and if in order, the question of authorising the invitation of tenders will be considered when all budgetary issues for 2003 have been finalised and the precise allocations for 2003 fully determined.
